TURKMENISTAN COMMEMORATES MEMORIAL DAY

Today marks the 74th anniversary of the terrible natural disaster that occurred in Ashgabat. The people of Turkmenistan pay tribute to the victims of the Ashgabat earthquake, which is considered one of the most devastating disasters in the history of mankind.

The earthquake occurred on the night of October 5-6, 1948 in Ashgabat at 2:17 local time with a magnitude of 9-10 points. The situation was aggravated by the fact that the earthquake occurred in the dead of night, when most of the residents were asleep. The inability to detect signs of an approaching earthquake led to the fact that almost no one could leave their homes in advance. At one point, tens of thousands of people found themselves under the rubble of their own homes, without having time to realize what was happening.

A catastrophic earthquake almost completely destroyed the blooming Ashgabat and the surroundings of the capital drowning in gardens. The city has turned into a big mass grave.

Since 1995, the date October 6 has been marked in Turkmenistan as a Memorial Day.

The Embassy staff is grieving together with the Turkmen people on the occasion of this terrible tragedy of humanity.
